Borghild ARNESEN (1872-1950) - Lot 11
Borghild ARNESEN (1872-1950) Rare repoussé copper triptych panel depicting a cobra surrounded by monkeys in the jungle - 1920 Monogrammed and dated lower right on the central panel. 87 x 152 cm Note: this work was probably inspired by Rudyard KIPLING's The Jungle Book. Norwegian artist Borghild Arnesen is a major figure in 20th-century goldsmithing. Trained in drawing and painting by Harriet Backer and Asta Nørregaard, she continued her apprenticeship at the Académie Delécluse in Paris. A stay in Rome revealed her vocation for the metal arts. In 1899, she joined the Haute-Claire colony, founded in Marlotte by Armand Point, where she developed her talent in a symbolist spirit, specializing in embossed and chased copper and creating works dominated by fauna and flora motifs. Her work unfolds a mysterious imagination, nourished by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and Rudyard Kipling, as well as references to Mexican art, Indian mythology and religious narratives.
