Laurent MARTIN LO - Lot 131
Laurent MARTIN LO Kinetic sculpture in bamboo, rope and counterweight circa 2000 110 x 290 cm *Sold by designation NB: Laurent Martin's gravity-defying bamboo sculptures "Lo" sway in the air, drawing harmonious curves like the graceful strokes of Chinese calligraphy. His creations immerse the viewer in the physical and sensory virtues of organic MATERIAL. Following the knots and fibers of the plant, the structure of the sculptures is shaped using tension ropes and fishing rods. The bamboo is then dried for months, exposed to the powerful elements of the Mediterranean. This intervention forms the basis of the final pieces, which are constructed using organic material, fishing lines and metal and ceramic weights. Like Calder's mobiles, the sculptures follow strict mathematical laws of movement and balance. His manipulation of bamboo plants, solid canes with thin, articulated contours, creates mobile sculptures in which the artwork consists not only of the bamboo itself, but also of the intangible hollow space inside, and the shadows and silhouettes they cast. A fragile harmony is achieved through oppositions: suppleness and strength, fullness and emptiness, light and shadow, movement and stillness.
