Original poster of General DE GAULLE's June 18, 1940 appeal. - Lot 352
Original poster of General DE GAULLE's June 18, 1940 appeal. "To all French people. France has lost a battle! But France has not lost the war!" 2nd edition at 10000 copies, with characteristic faults J. Weiner Ldt "PRINTED FOR GENERAL DE GAULLE BY J. Weiner Ldt - London WC1". With English translation framed lower left. 76 x 50.5 cm (folds, stains) Note: In 2005, this poster was included in the Unesco "Memory of the World" register. It is a truly historic document. Written by de Gaulle, whose signature is reproduced twice, it follows on from the June 18, 1940 appeal, whose terms it echoes, and the British government's recognition of the general as "leader of the Free French" on June 28. The aim was to assert the official character of Free France, the only legitimate government in the eyes of de Gaulle and the British, against the government of Marshal Pétain.
