Kongo / Yombe style regalia scepter - Lot 341
Kongo / Yombe style regalia scepter
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood, kaolin
Height: 64 cm
This scepter is surmounted by a standing Phemba maternity holding a child in her arms and giving it the breast. The mother's face is realistic, haughty, with a straight look and wide-open eyes whitened with kaolin, reflecting clairvoyance. The headdress is shaped like a mitre.
Phemba maternities were part of fertility rituals, conducted by a midwife.
