Mask of Pendé style - Lot 262
Mask of Pendé style
DRC / Angola
Wood, kaolin, cowrie shells, red beads, feathers, ropes
Height : 65 cm
Polychrome mask characterized by a long projection extending beyond the chin, slightly curved forward and decorated with a large geometric frieze. The white face with scarred cheeks is crowned with a headdress decorated with cowries, red beads and feathers, at the top of which a small white face is enthroned in high relief. The Giwoyo mask (among the Central Pendé) or the Kiwoyo mask (among the Eastern Pendé) is used during theatrical performances. Worn horizontally, like a cap on top of the dancer's head, it expresses the link with the realm of the dead and would represent the image of a funeral mask, such as a corpse lying on the bed during a wake. The projection is curved at the end like the feet would be in a bed.
