Kuba style functional pipe - Lot 150
Kuba style functional pipe
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood, brass
H : 49 cm
Anthropozoomorphic stove pipe representing a human mask with ram's horns. The swollen eyes, stretched and slit, are inscribed in large sockets under the triple arch of the eyebrows. The pyramidal nose is imposing. Characteristic tear lines adorn the cheeks The mortise, connecting the furnace and the pipe, is covered with rows of brass wire. The curved pipe is decorated with finely engraved motifs. The ram's horns suggest that the owner of the pipe was a dignitary and member of the royal family, as sheep were a royal prerogative of the Kuba nyim and his family.
