Statuette of Songye style - Lot 257
Statuette of Songye style
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
Height : 24 cm
The hieratic attitude of this female statuette is expressed through the hands with splayed fingers, placed on a bulbous belly, an elongated face and a rounded forehead, large almond-shaped eyes, heavy bulging eyelids, a fleshy prognathic mouth, and arms folded backwards. At the top of the skull, a horn reinforces the ominous aspect. The monumental feet are incorporated into the base. This statuette is related to the central style of the Kalebwe Ya Ngongo (see François Neyt).
