Statuette of Songye style - Lot 255
Statuette of Songye style
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
Height : 34 cm
The hieratic attitude of this male statuette is expressed through the hands with splayed fingers, placed on a bulbous belly, an elongated face and a rounded forehead, large almond-shaped eyes, heavy bulging eyelids, a bean-shaped open mouth, a triangular, blunt nose, square shoulders and arms bent backwards. At the top of the skull, a horn reinforces the ominous appearance. The monumental feet are incorporated into the base. This statuette is related to the central style of the Kalebwe Ya Ngongo (see François Neyt).
