Kwele style mask - Lot 218
Kwele style mask
Gabon
Wood, pigments
Height: 26.5 cm
The face of this mask is characteristic of the Kwele style: on a whitened, slightly concave cordial field, a pyramidal nose underlined with black stands out, as well as a small mouth incised with vertical lines with visible teeth, which is located under the concave field, and half-moon shaped eyes, widely stretched and inflated. The bulging forehead shows geometric scarification and plagiocephaly (flattening of the central part of the forehead).
